May 2026 signal

May 2026: Anthropic Claude is now default-on inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Copilot Cowork hit GA on 1 May.

Two material shifts have landed since the 15 April licensing change. First, Microsoft is now enabling Anthropic Claude models inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint Copilot experiences on by default for eligible tenants — you no longer have to opt in. Second, Copilot Cowork went generally available on 1 May 2026 at $99 per user per month inside the E7 bundle, putting agentic AI in front of every M365-licensed organisation. If your AI policy was written before May, it needs a pass. Our Copilot Cowork explainer and Microsoft 365 AI consultant page cover what to do about it; the off-the-shelf vs. custom calculus has shifted too.

The 2026 Shift

More than half of UK firms now actively use AI — and the conversation has moved on.

Adoption is no longer the story. The businesses pulling ahead aren't buying more subscriptions — they're building agentic AI: autonomous tools that execute multi-step workflows on their behalf, inside their own policies.

Generic AI tools have the features. They don't have your guardrails.

Off-the-shelf AI tools are built for everyone — which means they're built for no one in particular. They don't know your data policies, your approval workflows, or your compliance requirements. That's not a feature gap — it's a risk.

Bespoke AI tools are scoped to your business from day one. Every automation, every workflow, every data interaction runs inside the guardrails that matter to you.
